You have cancer! Really?
Many patients who hear from their doctor they have cancer, feel trapped. Speechlessness, frightening, often panic. The doctor reassured.
Often the tumor is located in a benign stage. In a variety of cancer diagnoses cancer is harmless. There is no need for immediate attention, especially merciless therapy. "Radical" surgery or chemo or radiation requested by the patient, is usually not necessary because many "cancer" indications never become life-threatening.
However, once cancer is mentioned, it seems difficult to engage with a different approach than the "merciless". Ironically, the success of early detection of cancer in the search for suspicious tissue changes seem to urge physicians and patients to a treatment decision , where often nothing at all is to treat.
In the U.S., the governmental health officer has recently proposed a solution to the problem. Experts at the National Cancer Institute published at the end of August 2013 an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association. There oncologists ask for a narrower definition of cancer or its variants.
The word cancer would suggest an inevitable, fatal outcome, the authors write. They propose to designate as cancer only those tumors that develop with a "reasonable probability" of a dangerous disease. Other abnormalities should be classified as "abnormal cells" or "tissue lesions" in order to avoid over-diagnosis and over-treatment.
