Caries, periodontitis, cancer

“Please open your mouth!” the dentist says. Their well-trained eye does not only detect caries and periodontitis at the teeth, but also abnormal cell proliferation in the oral cavity and pharynx. And then there is for example this roughness of the oral mucosa. The analysis of tissue samples often shows: Yes, it is cancer.

The German Dental Association (Bundeszahnärztekammer ) predicts about 10,100 new cases for men and 3,800 for women in the year 2012. The 5-year survival rate for men is about 43 to 50 percent, for women about 56 to 65 percent. Early detection and timely treatment are crucial.

Oral cancer is a life-threatening disease – statistically especially for men, the German Dental Association says. For men, cancer of the oral cavity and pharynx is the fifth most common cancer in 2012, for women the fifteenth most common cancer.

The good news: “Oral cancer or its preliminary stage can be timely detected during a dental routine inspection. Thus regular checks by the dentist are also cancer screenings”, the president of the German Dental Association, Dr. Peter Engel, explains. “Dentists work closely together with the German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum – DKFZ) and scientific disciplines concerning the prevention of and information about life-threatening cancer.
